Takehito Fujii ( Sculpture and Drawing),
Ken Matsuyama ( Oil painting and Sculpture)
What does one wish to express when presenting the
"human"? It is not only seeking to depict the "form" of a "person" for
that ignores the mental and social qualities that define what it means
to be human.
It is from this point of view that this exhibition is being held, asking
four contemporary artists, each with their own perspective, to embark
on an expedition to express the human nature.
Painting in the
traditional Japanese method, Ryoko Kimura turns around the old standard
of "the beauty" as she depicts her handsome males (referred to in Japan
as "Ikemen") in a fantastic nature from the perspective of the woman.
Manipulating people and scenery to create his own virtual reality, Koji
Sekimoto then brings this to a different dimension in photograph. With
the light and shadow of the human spirit as his theme, Sekimoto seeks to
find that amorphous border between the truth and the lie.
With his own unique outlook, Takehito Fujii hammers and bends iron in
the style of a blacksmith, to produce his "doll" in the form of a little
girl and also the bust of a criminal, showing two contrasting
expressions through the same historically presented medium of sculpture.
While continuing to paint his extraordinarily lifelike "gravure" girls,
Ken Matsuyama builds on the success of his "Paint Paintings", capturing a
variety of conceptual themes in oil on canvas.
In this
exhibition, in addition to the works of each artist in their
presentation of the human nature, other sculptures and drawings that
resulted in the process leading to this showing are also displayed.
We would be pleased if you are able to sense some of the meaning and
fascination in the expression of the works presented in this exhibition.
